Parc National de Volcans (PNV) is part of the Virunga conservation area, in which Dian Fossey the American primatologist set up a gorilla research fund in beed to protect the endangered mountain gorillas which were at a verge of extinction. The Virunga region comprises of 3 national park, the Parc National de Volcans stretching at the Rwandan side with the highest number of mountain gorillas, Virunga national park in Congo and Mgahinga national park in Uganda with the least number of mountain gorillas.

Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park has 10 habituated gorilla families, and one group of 8 people is allowed to go visit a single gorilla group per day. 80 gorilla permits are available per day for gorilla tracking in Rwanda and hence visitors are advised to book over six months in advance as competition for gorilla permits is high and you may not get one on a last minute booking.
